Meet Gaetano Lo Coco

about Tchaikovski's Symphony n° 6

Nine days after the premiere of his symphony ‘Pathétique’, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky died in mysterious circumstances. Does this ‘symphony of suffering’ have a story to tell?
Galina Ustvolskaya's ‘Amen’ was composed just as the Berlin Wall was collapsing and the future of Soviet Russia seemed more uncertain than ever.

One hundred years of Russia's dramatic history separate Tchaikovsky's and Ustvolskaya's last masterpieces: each is the final testament of an artist profoundly removed from society.

By playing musical extracts on the piano and evoking the literature, art and cinema that surround these compositions, conductor Gaetano Lo Coco sheds light on their fascinating history and what they have to say to us today.
