When Onegin bursts into Tatiana's little world, her heart begins to pound for this flamboyant dandy from the capital. During the night, she writes a searing letter to the man she sees as the messenger of destiny who will help her escape from her life. Alas, the young man rejects her advances. Their lives become a series of failed, derisory and tragic encounters, in the course of which Onegin kills his friend Lenski in a duel before eventually encountering Tatiana once again, now a princess. He declares his love for her. She (loves and) rejects him.
Pushkin's Eugene Onegin, a sublime novel of failure, moved Tchaikovsky, who adapted the text in the space of one night. Both lyrical and powerfully dramatic, the opera paints an incisive picture of the Russian society of its time: it remains nonetheless a timeless work portraying disenchanted youth's loss of illusions.
Julien Chavaz's subtle and sensitive production, sets out to show the fine line between dream and reality: the shattering of ideals on the reefs of existence. Conducted by Marta Gardolińska, this production sees Enkeleda Kamani, unforgettable Violetta in La Traviata, in the role of Tatiana, opposite Jacques lmbrailo as Onegin.
